Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja took to Twitter to report earth tremors they have been experiencing in recent times. According to their tweets, their homes have experienced vibrations from the grounds. They fear that an earthquake is about to happen in the FCT.

However, the FCT Emergency Management Agency in a statement released, says there is no cause for alarm as the earth is only reacting to stress from mining activities in some parts of the territory.

Residents of some parts of Abuja experienced the tremor this morning again.

  1. Yes I succumb to your comment, num 7 especially. Those residents in the affected areas should look for a place to stay for now until the FG do something about it. Prevention they say is better than cure.

  2. My question would be, has the Federal Emergency Management Agency carried out any form of thorough investigation to identify the cause of the Earth tremor or are they just providing safety tips based on mere exaggeration?
My suggestion to the agency would to:
    1. Carry out a thorough investigation to identify the cause of the Earth tremor
    2. Identify all seismic/mining activities within the affected areas and
    3. Check the proximity between affected residential areas and the mining/seismic sites
    4. Direct the operators to discontinue from all seismic/mining activities and define clear parameters and controls for such activities, by reviewing the PEP and WMS.
    5. Prepare adequately for real-time Earthquake in the event of one occurring in Abuja
    6. Educate people within the affected areas on the need to be prepared by providing a comprehensive information and tips on earthquake and how to stay safe.
    7. Advice people to vacate the affected areas temporally if the Earth tremor continues and the cause is not established.
