The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday has detained an 80-year-old man who tried to abduct three children around the Oluwole market, near Waterside, in Apapa.

The man, whose name is Muftau, was detained in a boat along Apapa-Olodi Apapa waterside while he was trying to run away from an angry mob.

According to an eyewitness during the scene, Adetunji Salami, the suspect was caught with the children after “touching their foreheads with money he brought out from a white envelope”.

“When we asked why touching them, he quickly joined a canoe going to Olodi Apapa. We then stopped the boat midway and he was dragged down,” he said.

One of the children was asked about the incident, he said that the suspect brought out money and rubbed it on his forehead. According to the boy, the man approached them and asked for road directions on how he can get to Olodi Apapa after which he brought out money and touched their foreheads with it:

“He approached us and asked how he could get to Olodi Apapa. We directed him and (he) brought out money to touch our foreheads.”

Mr. Muftau upon interrogation with him, however, denied that he didn’t have any contact with the children. He claimed he had never seen them before.

But some traders that sell in Oluwole market said they had seen him ‘patrol’ the market and thought he was an insane man because of his unkempt appearance.

The police officers intervened in the situation while the mob was assaulting the suspect and carried him away to Area B Police Division for more interrogation.

When contacted, the Lagos Police Spokesperson, Chike Oti, said he had heard about the incident that occurred but was yet to get the details about it.

“They are with the CP (Commissioner of Police) and as soon as they are done, I will give out details,” Mr. Oti, a superintendent of police, said this over the phone.

He however did not get back as at press time.
