Arsene Wenger surprised the sporting world yesterday when he declared he will be quitting his job as Arsenal Coach at the end of the season.
Details have been revealed on why the longest serving Premier League coach in English Premiership is resigning. According to a club source, Wenger had no choice but to quit his job, after being told by the hierarchy of the club he would be sacked if he doesn’t want to step down.
Wenger declared the decision to his players as news emerged on Friday morning.
The 68-year-old who has joined Arsenal from Nagoya Grampus Eight in 1996, started by telling them “I have bad news for you – I’m leaving the club at the end of the season.”
Many of the players started crying, with the players staring at each other speechlessly.
It has emerged that Arsene Wenger has decided to leave, as he no longer has total control over the transfer. The club has hired Sven Mislintat from Borussia Dortmund to handle player transfers. And Arsenal wants a gaffer that will fit into their structure, rather than the huge figure of Arsene Wenger dominating the club at all levels.
The increasing apathy of the club’s fans is another major reason Wenger has finally called time on his Arsenal career. There have been lots of empty seats during football matches at the Emirates Stadium, leaving the club disturbed about their image and potential sponsors.
And while the players have faltered on the pitch, the club’s hierarchy also became concerned about a lack of discipline in the camp.
Meanwhile, ex-super eagles player, Kanu Nwankwo has mentioned that playing under Arsene Wenger was the best time of his football career. The Ex-Arsenal FC star said this in an appreciation post he made to Wenger yesterday.
He wrote;
‘Big shoes for anyone to fill, playing for Arsenal under Arsene was one of the best periods of my career, 2 premiership, 2 FA cups, The Invincibles, playing with some of the best-assembled players, influencing millions of fans in Africa to support this great club are some of the memories that come to fore today but above all the privilege to have played for a gentleman like Wenger is most cherished. ? ? ? ? ‘
