‘Send me to jail’ 43 year old man makes an appeal to court, gives his reason

Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo turned to a drama theatre on Friday when a 43-year-old man known as Saburi Yusuf, was alleged of damaging a car and a windscreen and told the court that he was willing to go to jail.

Yusuf, standing trial before Magistrate Idowu Olayinka on one count of severe damage pleaded that he was guilty to the offense.

When Magistrate Olayinka asked the defendant whether he would was capable to recompense for damages rather than go to prison, he said he preferred going to jail.

“I rather go to jail instead of paying damages. I have no source of getting any money,” Yusuf said.

However, after listening from both the offender and the petitioner, Olayinka remanded Yusuf in prison and adjourned the case until January 26, 2018, for detailed facts and sentence.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Olakunle Shonibare informed the court that Yusuf did the offense on October 28 at Adu village, OGTV/Ajebo road in Abeokuta.

Shonibare said the defendant illegitimately damaged the body of an Opel Sintra car that is valued at N38,000 and the car’s windscreen which is also valued at N25,000 and two glasses of sliding windows that are valued at N30,000 belonging to a man called Tunde Olalaye.

He said when Yusuf was interviewed after his arrest, he said he was sleeping by the roadside after going for a naming ceremony and was drunk “all of a sudden, I felt someone kicked me and I later discovered that it was the complainant.

“I then went to his house to damage his properties because he even undressed me.”
